Information Theory combines the elegance of mathematics with numerous applications, including data communication, data storage and cryptography. It was essentially first developed by Claude Shannon, who applied ingenuously the law of large numbers to the problems of data compression and communication. Since Shannon's landmark 1948 paper many elegant results have been obtained; several among them have found their way to the development of real-life applications, including storage and communication systems.

Claude Shannon was born April 30, 1916. In his honor, the IEEE (the world’s largest association of electrical and electronics engineers) organizes a series of Shannon centennials, one of which is this talk, in which some important results of Information Theory will be reviewed briefly, including more recent results on multiuser information theory. An overview of some current research topics will also be given.
